What to Watch | TV

Love Life | HBO Max | Comedy, Romance

Season 2 premiere, Thursday, Oct. 28: When HBO Max launched last year, Love Life was among the first of the streaming service’s Max Originals—but who can remember May 2020, which seems like 100 years ago? The first season followed a young woman (played by Anna Kendrick) navigating various romances; season 2 focuses on the dating travails of another Love Life character (William Jackson Harper, The Good Place). Besides an intriguing premise, this anthology series also has a killer supporting cast (including SNL’s Ego Nwodim and Punkie Johnson) that could drive Love Life for several more seasons.

Star Trek: Prodigy | Paramount+ | Animated, sci-fi

Series premiere, Thursday, Oct. 28: Realizing that the first waves of Star Trek fans are getting a bit old (but can still go to space—congrats, William Shatner), the Star Trek franchise is reaching out to younger audiences: Star Trek: Prodigy was originally destined for Nickelodeon. In the animated series, a group of teen aliens has stolen the Federation ship Prodigy, and soon learn that a hologram “captain” (voiced by Voyager’s Kate Mulgrew) has been activated to provide emergency guidance for the wacky kids. Other Prodigy voices include Jason Mantzoukas, Dee Bradley Baker, and Brett Gray, and new 30-minute episodes drop weekly.

Doctor Who | BBC America | Adventure, sci-fi

Season 13 premiere, Sunday, Oct. 31: In Jodie Whittaker’s final turn as the Doctor, a “Halloween Apocalypse” is nigh as an ancient, evil force prepares to terrorize the universe—did you expect your last day on the job to be a chill one, Doc? Beyond that, not much else is known about the six-episode Flux season, which will be followed by three feature-length specials in 2022, with Whittaker finally handing off the Doctor’s shoes in the fall, making for a long, time-wimey goodbye. Season 13 also introduces new character Dan Lewis (played by British comedian John Bishop), who’s rumored to be integral to Doctor Who’s future—juicy gossip!

What to Watch | Movies

Army of Thieves | Netflix | Action, drama

Movie premiere, Friday, Oct. 29: Zack Snyder is so done with superheroes—he’s doubling down on zombies for Netflix now. There are few undead walkers in Army of Thieves, which takes place before the events of last spring’s Army of the Dead and follows that movie’s safe-cracker character, Ludwig (Matthias Schweighöfer). Army of Thieves is an Ocean’s 11-esque heist flick, summed up nicely by Ludwig: “[It’s] like a movie film, where each one of us has a different skill set, and it’s only working together that we can pull off that which needs the pulling off.” Exactly, Lud.

Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin | Paramount+ | Horror, thriller

Movie premiere, Friday, Oct. 29: In the seventh Paranormal Activity movie—and the first to go directly to streaming—documentary filmmaker Margot (Emily Bader) gains access to a secluded Amish community, hoping to learn more about her long-lost mother and family. Sounds quaint and heart-warming, right? Nope: things get weird fast, and that trademark Paranormal Activity night-vision footage ratchets up the terror with heart-pounding intensity—they’re not long on plot, but the movies in this franchise never fail to scare. Have fun watching at home . . . in the dark.

The Invisible Man | HBO Max | Horror, sci-fi

Now streaming: The Invisible Man was one of 2020’s scariest psychological thrillers—well, that, and COVID-19 life in general. The story of Cecilia (Elisabeth Moss, The Handmaid’s Tale) trying to escape an abusive relationship with a man who now has the power of invisibility is not only science fiction but also illustrates the very real horrors of stalking, gaslighting, and trauma. As always, Moss is fantastic in the role of a tormented woman, which makes her turn in the recent Wes Anderson comedy, The French Dispatch, such a relief (it’s not streaming yet, but rest assured that What to Watch will let you know when it is).

Dopesick | Hulu | thriller

Now streaming: Michael Keaton stars in Hulu’s latest limited series, directed by Barry Levinson, chronicling the harrowing true story of how the opioid epidemic in America came to be. Along with Keaton, the series stars Rosario Dawson, Peter Sarsgaard, Michael Stuhlbarg, Kaitlyn Dever, and more. If you’re currently watching Impeachment, then perhaps another dramatized true story like Dopesick may be up your alley?

Our top TV and movies picks

Universal advice on what to watch for all people at all times is impossible, but we’ve assembled some of our current TV and movie favorites that we think you might dig (if not, give us yours—we’re cool with that).

What to watch on Netflix

Netflix is the 8,000-pound gorilla of streaming, a content cannon that generates more original shows and movies than even TV professionals like us can keep up with. Not everything that comes after the big “N” (dun-dun!) is top-shelf entertainment—ever seen The I-Land or Fuller House?—but Netflix’s batting average is still pretty impressive.

Hulu has broken away from Netflix’s shadow in recent years as a competitive original content producer—in quality, at least; no one can keep up with Netflix’s quantity.
